The rise in social media usage has opened the doorways for people to earn online and also for the brands to grow more. One of the fields that have emerged through social media is social media influencing. Social media influencers on various platforms earn by collaborating with brands for affiliate marketing. If we generally see what affiliate marketing is, it is a marketing process in which you promote someone else’s product, and when somebody buys it on your recommendation, then you get the commission from that purchase. So, in the same way, influencers earn by affiliate style marketing but through the digital medium.

If you use any social media platform or if you follow any influencer on Instagram or YouTube, you might have noticed the swipe-up links that the influencers post on the stories or mentions them in the description of the videos, posts, or bio. The commission is derived from two ways, either through a pay per click method that a small commission is earned whenever somebody clicks a link and visits the website or the pay per sale method that the commission is earned when an actual purchase is made. Many influencers prefer the pay-per-sale method as it generates a higher commission rate than the pay per click which depends upon the traffic on the website. Also, it is easier to convince people who follow you because of your honest reviews and recommendations to buy a product to earn a good amount than to gather numerous people for clicking the link and website trafficking.

Some influencers make a full-time income through affiliate-style marketing as brands also hire influencers for long-term work when they provide high sales. The earning depends upon various factors such as followers, engagement, influencing niche, platform, and the amount that the brand pays. It also depends on the number of brands that approach you, which in return relies upon your followers, engagement, and niche.

Do not run for followers. The number of followers does not matter to the brands to approach you or the commission you earn, but the engagement does. There are influencers who 5K followers but more engagement than influencers with more followers. It all depends upon the type of content you create, how much people can relate to you, and how much they can personally approach you. And we can already see the micro-influencers taking over affiliate marketing in 2021. Also, stick to your niche as you have an audience who is interested in that particular niche. If your niche is makeup and you start promoting pet food, your followers will be disinterested, and you won’t make much commission.
